91 Caprice Wagon Liftgate Release Buttons Failed

Hello,
I need tail gate liftgate latch release parts.

Have 1991 Caprice wagon with power liftgate release. When I push button on dash or on the tailgate. the window glass will not release. Have to use key in lock and turn it to release window and open it to open tailgate.

Problem. Tried to find replacement solenoid and cannot locate one on line or in parts stores. It appears to be a discontinued part. Having trouble finding a 91 to 96 (Only years and models shown this part applies) Caprice, Roadmaster or Vista cruiser wagon as a parts car too.

Still need to test the circuit but at present, I am pretty sure the solenoid at the latch has failed. Is there a place I can get a replacement or this one repaired? I am overall very happy with the car and want to keep it. But I need to be able to repair the thing when things break. I tried ordering one on line, but a few days after placing my order, it came back canceled, part no longer available.

Thanks, Ron

(the book shows that either the solenoid by itself or the whole latch unit can be replaced. However, both parts come back as not available, discontinued everywhere I look.)

Have you tried the dealer for the parts, its usually my last resort but they may have it for a premium price. They still seem to have certain parts for my 89 wagon until their supplies run out.

Also like j-cat said, check the local pick your part yard, you never know what you will find there and it will be cheap..

Good luck

Re: 91 Caprice Wagon Liftgate Release Buttons Failed

I already have been to the dealer. That is where I got the replacement part information and what other models I could get this part off of.

I have been to the salvage yard. In fact, I just went to one that its yards had 5 wagons last month. today, all are scrapped out and gone. They just have some sedans and they are not equipped with the right part.

I finished checking the latch and it is definately the solonoid. Have power all the way to the end of the connector that plugs into it. Push the gate release button, and the test light comes on strong.

The only good thing that happened today is I found a missing reflector trim piece for the inside door panel on my 92 skylark and installed it. Now it will no longer bug me when I open the door and see it missing.
