Carbon Fiber Hood

Im almost done with my Tamiya R32 with engine detail, the hood is clear so i was thinking to tape a mesh on to it and spray it, but will this work with a spray can? and does anyone know where to get really fine mesh in the chicagoland area? Or should i go and buy carbon fiber decals?

If you've mastered the mesh method, then why not? But carbon fiber decals might be less of a hassle.

I don't think a spray can will work to well. Check out the latest issue of
Model Cars magazine, there is an article on doing a carbon fiber hood with Scale Motorsport decals.

I wouldn't use the spray can, since you'll need to spray the paint in very thinned fine quantity. I don't think you can get that effect with a spray can. The airbrush can do that. If budget is not an issue, then go the CF-decal way

Here's an example of CF decal. I think it looks quite convincing and when it's had a gloss coat it will look even better. This pic was taken a few days ago when the decal was first applied and has since had the areas around the vents cut out.

I'd say use decal, no question. Scal Motorsport stuff is brilliant, but you do need to use decal solution on it. I have a part finished 911GT1 prototype from '96 completetly covered in the stuff, which sounds like a nightmare but actually wasn't that bad. the problem is, it confuses the hell out of my digital camera when I try and photograph it!!!

I basically just punctured the area with a blade (the decal was completely dry) and applied generous amounts of decal solution to make it fold over the edges. The louvres had fresh pieces of decal applied. I will try to post a pic of the finished hood tomorrow.
