94 Grand AM with a SOHC Quad 4:
Once this engine gets up to temp for awhile it shuts down. When trying to restart key on eng. off the ignition relay and ignition mod. click very fast repeatedly. Also the the ignition fuse fluctuates, the temp gauge and the speedometer bounce. I have changed the ign. mod. and the coil housing trying to solve this problem with no luck. Battery, Alternator, Oil, Coolant all appear to be fine. Coils Ohm out at 0.3 per my known specs. Anyone had this problem or have any insight into this matter?

Re: 2.3 SOHC shuts off after getting warm
Welcome to AF !!
If the relay clicks, its either not getting proper voltage, or its bad. Also check all your engine grounds.

Is it possible that a 2.3 SOHC Quad 4 to shut itself off without the coolant temp sensor letting me know that it is over heating or the coolant to be overly hot yet the engine obviously being hotter? Basically will it shut off if it's to hot regardless of the coolant temp sensor? All I know is the top of the engine is hot ass heck, the coolant warm, no coolant pressure, no outside leaks, and no coolant in the oil.

Re: 94 2.3 SOHC Stumped
No need to post another thread on this topic.
![]() Im merging this with your other thread. Yes its possible your temp sensor is not working properly. Though your gauge probley wouldnt read correctly, and your cooling fan might run all the time when the engines running. Here is a link for the temp sensor testing procedure. You mentioned your gauges were bouncing around, that could indicate your ICP is going out, or you have a short somewhere. Sounds like your crank shaft sensor is going bad. They usualy fail once the engines warmed up. This link has the testing procedure, try this when it cont start. Hope that helps ! Edit... ALso you might check for trouble codes. Pretty sure your car is ODB I, if you have this Data Link Connector (DLC) under your steering column you can check them. It should be the twelve pin connector. ![]() And this link has the ODB I test procedure, almost to the bottom, post #4 & #5. N body trouble codes
