I was thinking of making an exhaust flange to replace my catalytic converter. Anyone have any idea on how much hp I might get back from doing this, and if it'll make my APEXi World Series exhaust significantly louder?

backpressure
I also heard that if you let your exhaust flow too freely that you will lose too much backpressure and take away from your bottom end. is this true? and if so how dramatic is the loss? is the trade off worth it for the added top end power?

I have I/H/E and a high flow cat, which is basically a straight through resonator with a hole for the O2 sensor. It's made by Toucan (I know - shitty company), but I got it very cheap - $ 120 (CAN) I think that's about $70 US. I have no emmissions laws here so I don't have to worry about cops, but I have noticed a lack in low end power when I compare driving stock to this. I still think its worth it, for the top end power. The engine feels a lot more responsive with the new cat.

Yeah I recently did the same mods, to my 98' ex, and the thing hauls and sound great, I have noticed that I can rev higher than stock, and my high end power is wonderful While I had the shop strap on my exhaust, I had them give me bigger piping all the way back,.... ( I got a cat-converter/ well at least that's what it said on EBAY) No your supposed cat converter, IS REALLY a straight through "RESINATOR",.... But compared to stock, I would not go back from the mods I've done,....:sun:
