I just bought a 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo w/ 59,000 miles on it last week. My problem is that when we got it, there was a distinct knock. The car was warmed up and it was still there. A few days later I was having issues with power, you would have to almost have to floor it to get any momentum. Now the knocking is still there, louder when it is cold then less noticeable when engine is warm. A mechanic said it sounded like a blown rod but when i just took it back to the dealer & his mechanic they said it is normal with 3.1 liter engines. They want to change fuel filter cause they think that is the cause of no power. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Is these problems related or 2 different problems? Thanks for your input...Got a good deal on the car and am hoping its nothing too serious.
P.S. drivetrain warranty is almost up! |

Re: 1999 Monte Carlo w/no power and knocking engine
The fuel filter has nothing to do with the knocking, thats for sure. I would strongly reccomend you take it back and demand they find what is making the noise. The 3.4's do tend to have a ticking problem when cold, but there should be nothing there after its warm.
If its knocking/ticking, take it back and get it looked at....most likly why you got such a great price on it..... |

Re: 1999 Monte Carlo w/no power and knocking engine
those 3100's are known to blow intake gaskets which puts cooland into the oil, and for some reason the camshaft and cam bearings seem to be the first affected. could possibly be a valvetrain noise / cam bearing knocking causing engine to run incorrectly. i agree with blazes. demand they find the noise
