Brake Fluid Type??

Being the new owner of a GTRA I have been going throught the car before I get it on the track. I have done a rework of the hack job the school guys did to the cable clutch job. It took a few days and a little thought but the clutch leg effort is cut down well below 1/2 of the past leg effort. Looking at the brakes, the Panoz shop manual said to use only Brembo Brake Fluid and not to mix fluids. Is this the current thinking? What is everybody running? If I can't find Brembo fluid do I really need to do a complete flush? DOT 3 DOT 4 or DOT 5? Whats so special aboutu Bremdo fluid?

Paul, I have used Motul RBF 600 brake fluid with great success for many years. I flushed my car when I got it and have swapped across to this this fluid with no dramas.

Gary Jones gave me some brake fluid a few months ago. Panoz gave it to him when he bought several GTRAs. The brake fluid was from performance friction. I guess Panoz didn't read the manual either. I don't think it matters what dot 3 - dot 4 fluid you uses as long as it has a high boiling point.

I really use some brakes on our A/Sedan car (3300 #'s and 162 mph peak speeds at Daytona).

The only fluid that would not boil was Castrol SRF. Its the same fluid they use on Formula One cars. WOW is that stuff expensive.

But, I never had a long pedal or the pedal go to the floor again (A/Sedan cars are brake cooling challenged via the rules).

if you are fast enough it MATTERS! We used to use Super Blue but after several track outtings with brake fade we went to Castrol SRF. The stuff is more expensive than GOLD but it deff. works! We still can get fade when we are aorking HARD but the stuff is the best. Ask around! It last forever too and you dont need to bleed nearly as often!

You said you don't need to bleed very often. Can you be more explicit as to your bleed intervals. I bleed before every event so if I could extend the life of the brake fluid it may off set the cost of more expencive fluid.

I am embarrassed to say but we have gone a LONG time without bleeding using the SRF (liquid Gold as we call it). Maybe something like 4-5 race weekends (about 16-20 @ speed track hours). Now I am not recommending that interval but you dont need every weekend. We dont ever do that with the panoz (we did that with our 911 RS america but it needed it). I am currently bleeding every other weekend some times every third. If you are not driving at the limit add more time. SRF is $90 a bottle....steep but worth it!

I am also a firm believer and long time user of Motul RBF 600.
$13 / pint. Castrol is what - $75 / pint.

It's your choice. I'd rather bleed each outing and flush once a year than avoid an unnecessary expense because you spend so much on Castrol.

We run the Motul Blue in our 3 Panozs and rarely bleed. Not sure I've ever got the brakes in the GTS cars to fade, but that depends alot on the tracks you run at and how fast you get going etc. This should be fine and is in common use in Porsche/BMW track cars.

BTW the brakes in the school cars are not the same rotors etc as the GTS cars so make sure you get the right stuff from Panoz when the time comes.

Paul, I also used the Motul Blue. The nice thing is that it also comes in a gold color. (although much harder to find, but the exact same formulation) Therefore when doing an entire system bleed you pump until the color changes. No brainier. Just alternate colors with each system bleed. Stuff works great at the RA speed level. When I bought the school car the brakes faded significantly. No longer the case.
