Question '96 Monte Carlo has oil in trans

Help! Im pretty sure what it is but before I go digging I want some solid advice.
Heres the scoop. My daughters '96 Monte had motor oil blow out of the transmission and I believe its the main seal which has blown. If that is the issue here, how much of a pain in the keister is it going to be to clean out the tranny and make it usable again? Changing the main seal isn't that big a deal for me but trannies are a mysterious being.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated except the one where I have to stick a fork in it
Thanks,
MasterDan

If its the main seal, then there will be no motor oil in the transmission, so there is nothing to worry about that. As for whats required to fix it, pull the tranny, unbolt the convertor, unbolt the flywheel, and there is your seal.

so you are saying the red transmission fluid now looks like engine oil ? If so you will need to clean out the transmission and most likely rebuild with a new torque converter...also the radiator/fluid lines need flushing...

what is your maintanance servicing for the transmission ? GM recommends every 100,ooomi ...this is a sure way to need a new transmission at this point...frequent fluid changes are required to get the long life...at a minimum the fluid should be replaced 40,ooomi. intervals WITH filter, and pan cleaning...
