I would like to know which scan tool to buy to use on my 1995 Camry Le 2.2 with obd1 interface. I want more than just to read codes I would like to read live data. I don't want to pay the $1000.00 and up some systems cost. I'm considering maybe a used snap-on scanner or a Autoxray but I'm just not sure what is the right tool to buy.

Others are welcome to correct me, but I believe that live data retrieval is only available on OBD-II vehicles. OBD-I will only give you the code stored in the ECM. These two systems are inherently different in how they interface with the vehicle.

Beware, there are dual scanners that will read both -I and -II codes and will show and record live data. But most dual ones are only -I compatible with GM/Ford/Chrysler vehicles and don't show live data. I've seen Toyota-specific OBD-I scanners for sale that are really no different than the old jumper wire technique, just in a nice plastic case.

Sorry to dissapoint, but if you're looking for real engine data, you'll have to do a little homework on what you want to measure, which circuits control it and how to tap those circuits to retrieve that data (usually a voltage). A DMM with long leads would give you the ability to see one at a time...you can usually backprobe into the connector or use a piece of paperclip as a test probe. Just be careful to not short anything out. Watch for nearby grounds and spinning parts.

I stand corrected. Though looking online, those suckers ain't cheap, averaging $500 for the unit itself and another $90 for the adapter. But if you REALLY want to see it live, you can. Good work!

Some of the vehicles made 1994-1995 were jump ahead models which were a
mixture of both OBD1 and OBD2 computer systems. Unfortunately the only
tools that will access these vehicles are the higher end scan tools with
the proper software, like the ones the repair shops use. We currently do
