96 caravan broke timing belt 3l

my 96 caravan died instantly.i did not have fuel at intake thought fuel pump went i put used pump in still no fuel. checked spark no spark. hooked up friends tester cam sensor comes up. take apart broken time belt. also had internal coolant leak so remove heads.change gaskets .(mistake was probably internal water pump leaking.)reassemble and ran however really rough.could smell fuel and excess fuel was coming out intake to air cleaner.thought bent valves;mixed cam sprockets, timing belt out.did compression test and had 135 on all 6 cyl.one note i can not install distributer too land roter exactly on 1 when 1 is tdc (taking into account different location from in to outside on cap for #1). should roter be exactly on 1 as it is fixed and non adjustable on 3l. where did i go wrong other than working on a 3l.

135 seems slightly low, I would re-check cam timing....(timing belt)

what should compression be? if timed correct should distributer rotor be pointing exactly at #1?

Re: 96 caravan broke timing belt 3l

The good book says compression should be around 178. Of course that's for a new engine. If you have around 150K miles I would expect around 160-165. Make sure you check it with the engine warm.

I've never worked on a 3 ltr so I'm just looking at the book. The distributor cap uses offset terminals. No idea why. It just adds to the confusion. Looking down at the top of the cap, the rotor contact inside the cap for the #1 plug wire is offset 90 deg clockwise from where the plug wire connects on the top of the cap. In other words, looking down at the cap, when you pull the cap off and hold the cap in the same position it would be if it were on the distributor, the rotor should be pointing between the #2 and #6 plug wire connections when at TDC.

Re: 96 caravan broke timing belt 3l

i have not worked on a 3l before this. i have taken into account the offset on the distributer cap. i know my timing marks are aligned and with#1 at tdc when i go to install the distributer rotor will not align exactly on #1 on cap. its either slightly before or or slightly after #1 on cap.it appears in between gears. maybe i mixed up cam gears therefore explaining 135 compression and rotor not pointing at #1.ive been looking at haynes book and it says dont mix up cam gears.im frustrated.looks like timing cover is coming off again.
