Re: just wanna be sure about dexron vi

I would highly recommend reviewing this thread posted at our Tips & Maintenance section.

No guarantee you won't have any issues switching to the Dex VI from Dex III but it should go fine. Mixing the two will not hurt since not all of the ATF is drained on a pan drop service. I've converted both of my Regals with the 4T65E autotransaxle to it and no issues to date. I use Royal Purple Max ATF in my GTP.

Re: just wanna be sure about dexron vi

Re: just wanna be sure about dexron vi

Running up to 8 oz of Seafoam tranny additive for a very short period of time won't hurt. As you can see from the link it does a good job of cleaning out the transaxle internals.

If your GTP is used as a daily driver best to stay with the Dex VI or Dex III. I use the Royal Purple Max ATF because my GTP is not a daily driver and used primarily for drag racing, ET Bracket. It is a high performance full synthetic ATF that meets the Dex III standard and runs about $10 per quart. Superior heat and friction so it is excellent for racing applications or heavy duty use. The Dex VI is a synthetic blend.

Also, I would highly recommend adding the accumulator shift kit mentioned.

Re: just wanna be sure about dexron vi

You're welcome.

I've had the shift kit installed for over 6 years and no issues. Just use the recommended spacers and not the radical ones. The reason for the shift kit is so the PCM module consistently sees shift timing less than .65 seconds so the P1811 DTC doesn't set causing a line pressure issue. Plus it compensates for clutch pack wear causing slippage which you will get regardless and will help reduce clutch pack wear so it balances out.

Re: just wanna be sure about dexron vi

Just FWIW...couple points on the Dexron VI.

- back-services any GM-built transmission back to the first Buick hydra-glides in the 1940s

- was developed specifically for the 6L90 which is a longitudinal transmission used in a dually pickup truck with a Duramax turbo diesel. The engine by itself is in the 650 ft-lb range (peak torque) and the truck is expected to be used towing up to 20,000 lbs gross trailer weight.....so.....instead of going friction/steel/friction/steel as in a normal clutch pack, the transmission is designed to go friction/friction/friction in direct contact. Higher temp service and the fluid is a synthesized "molecule".

Re: just wanna be sure about dexron vi

Hello. This is my first reply to this forum. I have a 2006 gt that gm specs dexron vi atf. I wll use this atf when it is tranny fluid change time. I have found a less expensive source for the vi atf. Of all places walmart's house brand of dexron vi is less than $4.00 a quart. I hade to go to several walmarts to find a couple of cases. But they do carry it. They did not have dexron vi in the name brands however. Just their house brand. Hoe this helps in $$$$ department.

Welcome to AF.

There is nothing wrong with the Walmart brand Supertech Dexron VI. Fully licensed by GM and made from the proper base stocks. It is a synthetic blend.

It used to be $2.97 per quart but the price went up. I've used it with no issues.
