JMS Porsche 935 Turbo Le Mans 1977 "X-Ray" 1/20

Since the debacle with the Red Bull-BMW behind me, I figured I´ll try something new before I get back to do that Jägermeister-Version. I just don´t feel tempted doing the BMW for awhile.

This is what I will build:





Reference of this particular car seems hard to get. If you have some, please let me know. I tried flickr.com and found some pictures of very similiar cars.

I always wanted to do that livery and I had a Fujimi 1/20 Porsche 935 Turbo kit since a while now. But I will need to kitbash a Tamiya 1/20 Kremer Porsche 935 Turbo.

First of all the chassis looks way better and gives a lot more detail to show (f.ex. does the Tamiya-kit include suspension sets)



Secondly I will need to get these unique wheel covers which are supplied in this Tamiya kit.



And thirdly I´ll take parts of the engine just to get the right amount of detail. And last not least I need to figure something out about the front light, which are totally different from both kit versions. But I have already thought about something.

I´ll start with some comparison pictures of the two kits, which will show you why you actually need the Fujimi kit to get this race car duplicated in the right way. Of course - the white one is the one I´ll use for the "X-Ray"-Version.

















This time I will do the body first without starting the rest so that if something goes wrong I didn´t invest all that time into the chassis and the interior. Main thing is the cleaning of course and there are lots of ducts and holes that need to be opened.





One problem concerns the build up plans from Fujimi or Tamiya. Both don´t offer painting guidance in arabic letters. So if there is somebody out there very capable of japanese, I have the instructions scanned already and I´ll be glad if somebody PMs me and we could swap ideas what the painting should be like.

And this time I´ll take no risk and go with the Gunze Sangyo Mr. Hobby TopClear B-501.

Stay with me and spare if this will take a little while. Work is rather busy these days.

All the liveries for this car are great. But I like this one the most. The car is awesome and it´s a shame that the decalsets are so hard to get nowadays.

And "yep" - an update already - quite uncommon for me.

I started on the bodywork opening the air ducts and modifiying the doors. I didn´t realize that this was open door build ... I wanted to keep it easy for me. Well, here we go....

Easy to see - now and for future updates - the green party are from the poor Tamiya kit. I opened the rear air ducts and put the Tamiya parts into it to make it more rear. See the difference:



As with the doors it took an hour of filing and trying. The drivers door is done now (except for the putty ).





The result was achieved by putting a plastic strip into the inner door as a spacer to make the door lean inwards at the top. The door will be thinned down on the bottom a little more to give it back its proper shape. But it seems to work.





That´s for the moment - so you see that I didn´t just post another projectplan. I went straight to work.

By the way...I am having a hard time to decide if I should build the 1:20 car (I usually work in 1:24). Is this scale that different from 1:24?

I did the Jagermeister 935 Tamiya 1:20 not to long ago, the kit was better than I thought, the engine detail was not too bad, I like your choice of decals, should look good when done. With the lights at the front, I moved one of the light fittings, and only use one light, masked an oval area and sprayed over the perspex.

I am delighted that you are doing a work in progress on this kit. I have this kit, the S27 JMS decal sheet, and the S27 grade-up photo-etch set on my "must do next" pile. So please include lots of detail shots. I'm curious why the body in my kit looks different from the two bodies you show. For example, the areas you marked for cutting our are already cut out in my sample. Is your Tamiya kit an original or re-release. My instruction sheet is in English.

I have the same plan. I just need to find a way to include the front light covers into the front bumper without ruining the clearness of it. (tonight it seems as I don´t find the correct words....)

I use the Fujimi kit as a base. I have never seen the Tamiya 1/20 kit of the 935 Turbo. Unluckily both of the instructions (Tamiya and Fujimi) are in japanese as far as the color descriptions are concerned.

Update-time. Over the last couple of days I did some work on the body.

I puttied the rear cowl. Interesting part of the kit is that there are various sink marks.



The next task was to open the parts which connect the rear fender of the original Porsche 911 and the fenderextensions which (besides other things) makes it a 935. The gaps were filled with plastic and need to be removed. I´m not sure whether I will put some mesh when finally assembling the kit.



Next up were the front lights. As you can see on the reference pictures there is only one light which is covered by round glas cover. My idea of replicating this part is the following: Use the light parts of the Kremer 935 and put them into the light openings of the body.



Then attach the chrome light parts and paint this part flat black.





Now apply the glas covers supplied with the kit. I masked them because I will need to putty and sand these glas covers into the front bumper to make it look as they were a part of it.





I need to be careful with the putty work as I can´t scratch or milk the glas parts I will keep as covers for the front lights. They will be masked when the body is in the paint and decaling stage.

That´s it so far.

Small update - but I seem to get there...

I´m still working on the head lights. I puttied the glas inlays and started to sand them down. I try to avoid to scratch the clear parts. When done I will use some finishing material to get the visible glass part as smooth as possible.



I also painted and decaled the main part of the engine lid. The parts were sanded 400, 600, 1500 and after the paint cured with 3000 grid. This time I used Dupli-Color Primer and Paint. The Primer works well, but it is some sort of yellowish and seethrough so I´m lucky that this car will be painted black. All other colors would be spoiled by the grey putty I applied on some parts of the body to make the surface smooth.

I applied the decals using decals softener only on the edges to make the surplus-parts conform around the edges. The model will be painted flat black and after the decals are applied Mr. Gunze Top Coat B502 will be used to avoid any clearproblems...I think I learned my lesson.

Nice progress, I do have one Question, is this the recently released 935 Martini or is it an older kit? I was just wondering why its 1/20 scale.

This an old Fujimi-kit, which I got from a friend for whom I sold his Porsche-kit collection.

I have some minor updates, which I like to share.

THe body is painted using the forementioned Dupli-Color paints. I also started to apply the door decals. They of course need some work around the door handles. Next up on my to-do list is the rest of decals. And then it will be clear coat - Mr. Gunze Top Coat arrived and is ready for use.
