Ferrari F40 Street-Track

Everyone,


After two weeks hiatus, I started a new project. The basis for the project is Tamiya's Ferrari F40 Monte Shell, which I traded with a fellow member here in AF .

This F40 was meant as a street car plus track monster machine. The concept was that the owner will be able to run it side by side with the FXX(you get the point )

This particular kit includes a very nice PE set, along with two sets of wheels (Speedline + original F40 wheels), racing bits (different side mirrors, fire extinguisher, on-board ECU), and a very nice Cartograf decal (I will use bits and pieces here and there).

Disclaimer: I do apologize for the picture quality and dirts!

I started with the dashboard, which was covered in SMS CF (not accurate I know, but one of my fetishes ).

The two holes on top were drilled for hoses. The hoses were created by using Teflon tape (I've seen this technique a long time ago, but Alex perfected it).

The cockpit was also covered in SMS CF.

The shift knob is from Sakatsu (my favorite item in the model so far).

The heat shield behind the cockpit was from Michael's (Thanks 935K3!)

The pedals were painted using Spazstix Ultra Chrome and weathered.

Wheels are the Speedlines included in the kit painted as time-attack version.

I like the dash. How much of that is scratched (if any)? And what's the story with the Michaels heat shield?

The dash is stock with added CF and cooling hoses. I opened the holes to add more depth for the gauges (which will be installed later).

935K3 finished his CLK-GTR Sportswear a while ago, and I asked him if the heat shield he used was from MFH. He told me that he got it from the cake decorating section at Michaels for $6 a roll.

The roll will last a lifetime and the texture looks spot on (the effect looks like BMF pressed against a mesh). It's just awesome! The only downside is that it has paper backing and not as flexible as BMF, but for the price I can't complain. Besides, I only applied it to large surface only.

The bottom chassis was also covered in SMS CF.



PE disc from Tamiya.

Engine was lightly wired.

BMF for heat shielding, and painted PE for the intercoolers from Tamiya.

Bits of machined aluminum here and there (Thanks Andy!), along with revised springs using wires and aluminum tubing.

Progress looks great. The heat shield is killer, i was just about to order some mfh heat shield, but now that i know you could get some from michaels. I'm going to pick some up, keep the progress going. Details and decals came out awesome.

Update:

The body was painted using TS30 Silver Leaf and cleared with Testors one coat lacquer (this is my first time using the Testors new one coat line).The new Testors line has excellent nozzle (almost like Tamiya), but the paint itself is very runny.

I still need some time to get use to it, so pardon the orange peel (and lots of them , especially the front cowling).

Mock-up of the body to see wheels fitment and make sure the rear hatch is flush with the body.

Decided to cut styrene sheet and mold it to the side panels to be more accurate.

Since the F40 has the rear wings molded in, I decided to cut it away to ease the painting process. The rear hatch fits plushly too

Mock-up of seats in the cabin, the seats were painted with TS33 Dull Red.

That´s a very uncommon color scheme. Nice looking though. The paint looks good and with an evening spent on polishing this should look more than nice.

About that rear cowl. It looks well fitting on the body. But what about the rear end around the exhaust. The cowl seems to stand up a little high above it. It could need just a little twist and fix IMO.

Looks good, just polish it out and you should be good. Like godfather stated, its an unusal color, but i like it. Italian red is too played out.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I knew I have to spend hours of polishing, once I saw the results after the final clear coat I guess polishing can be fun right???? More updates soon on this quick build.

Nice build, That Monteshell kit is awesome, I love the massive brakes & those wheels are wicked. I highly suggest removing the locating pins from the body. I didnt and the rear crowl looks stupid & doesnt close at all, even after spending hours sanding and getting a good fit, when matched to the body it doesnt fit.
Heres what I mean.

Sometimes what you can do is, once you have painted the car or cleared it and has some orange peel. Then you can sand and polish inbetween coats, then later on youll have less polishing in the long run. Creates a better paint job, it also has some downsides though.

Same thing happens to me time to time, and the more oj the more polishing and more of a chance of rubbing through the paint into the paint.

I really like the TS 30, it looks great at scale imho, perhaps more of a street color, but it'll look brilliant when polished up. Let us know how that Testors stuff handles the polishing.

I agree! This particular one however, had perfect TS30 coats that are glossy. I believed the orange peel started from the Testors One Coat Clear.

I don't know if it's because of my inexperience with the product, but I was unable to lay smooth coats (and it was only 2 final coats!). I guess I still have to practice the distance and pressure with it.
