03 Malibu gas and temperature meter go down

When driving my 03 Malibu, some of my dash lights turn on (safety belts, theft system, and a few other) and the temperature/gas meters go all the way down. After anywhere from 10 secs-5mins they will turn off and the meters will read fine again. It just happens out of no where! My car keeps running like a champ when this happens. Today i found out that if i smack the dash hard enough when it happens, it fixes the problem, but only mometarily as it happens again soon after. SORRY FOR THE LONG POST BUT I REALLY NEED HELP. if anyone has bumped into this problem or a similar one please let me know, or at least some advice on what to do. Thanks ahead of time.

It's not just that generation Malibus. My '04 Maxx has started having days when the temp guage doesn't read at all, then the next day everything's fine....
