New Distributor cap/rotor now it won't run

I installed a new distributor cap and rotor and now my 96' 4 cylinder Camry won't run. It starts but dies when I let up on the gas. What the heck did I do wrong? I was careful with the wires and double checked everything. I did not change the wires or plugs. The old cap and rotor were worn but the car ran ok. Can someone help me out. Yes I used OEM parts.

Al

You probably knocked a connector or vacuum hose loose near the distributor. Disconnect and solidly reconnect everything anywhere near the distributor.

Re: New Distributor cap/rotor now it won't run

What was the reason you replaced them in the first place? The most typical reason nowadays for a non-start on these Gen III Camrys is the ignition coil. They will act like that when they're in their final gasp...engine will only start with throttle applied and then die when you let off. And sometimes they just DIE. You've got a gasping one, I think. Check the resistances of the coil's primary and secondary terminals...if they're close to or out of spec, replace it. Good luck!

Make sure the firing order is correct.
(I have a Haynes manual that shows an incorrect order)

Check the resistance on the spark plug wires.
They're kind of delicate and could have been damaged when removed.
That could be your problem.
Perhaps I'm going over board, but I change the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and gaset under the cap, plus distributor O ring, together.
First time I checked spark plug wire resistance I got two at infinite resistance, they had been shorting down inside the spark plug tubes.
The manual has the specifics, something like not more than 15K ohms.
