Unhappy timing belt shredded

01 v6 shredded timing belt. Am i wasting my time trying to fix this? Any hints on getting the crankshaft pulley off? I can't seem to get anything to wedge in the crankshaft as chilton manual suggests.

looking for a little experienced help.

Jeff

Re: timing belt shredded

The simplest way, though kind of hesitant to use, is to use a large breaker bar and socket, wedge it against a solid piece of the truck. Then disconnect the ignition system or remove all the spark plug wires from the plugs and "bump" the starter with the ignition key. The engine starter should have enough torque to loosen the pulley bolt.

An optional method would be to wedge a screwdriver into the flywheel plate (you'll have to remove the cover)...this could be used to retorque the pulley bolt when you're done. Good luck!

Re: timing belt shredded

Thanks for ther tip...I ended up buying a piece of 24"x4"x1/8th" steel at Ace Hardware and drilling two holes that line up with the crankshaft pulley holes and a larger one that the 19mm socket would fit through and then added about a 18" cheater bar to my breaker bar and was able to break it loose. I used two phillips screw drivers to hold the tool next to the pulley and the steel was long enough to reach the frame and created the stability needed to remove that bolt.

Ended up replacing the upper and lower pulley as well as the water pump. All 3 pulleys were frozen. Once the crankshaft bolt was removed the job was not too tough. I also had to replace the crankshaft sprocket gear because I broke off several of the teeth trying to lodge a crowbar in order to remove the brankshaft bolt (doesn't work, don't try it, it only adds about $53 more to the job).

I was pleased that the 3.4 v6 is a non-interference engine and no damage was done to the heads, pistons or rods.

Total cost was about $350 in parts.

Re: timing belt shredded

It makes me wonder why the v6 is noninterference but the v8 isn't. I really wish the v8 had a double chain instead of the belt.

Re: timing belt shredded

Putting a timing belt on any V8 is just plain stupid to me....into a truck is maniacal.

BTW, sivad, nice job making your own spanner wrench.
