I have a 1997 and when I do this an 83 comes up on the HVAC display. I don’t what it means, but I do know that I can only get the heat in my car to go to the floor.

Re: Displaying HVAC diagnostic '97

There is no 83 listed in the manual but there is a B1983 which is "Source/Battery Voltage Low."

From what you described though sounds like the mode actuator.

I hope that's what it is, but I think it might not be. I’ve look at the actuator and it does move just in the wrong direction. Is that what they do when they go bad?

Sorry, don't know, but maybe there is a broken gear in the actuator (common problem).

I think it might be the control at this point. It went from manual to auto all by it self as I was driving today.

I'd suggest checking the ground buss. If it lost its ground with vibration or movement or temp change that would have the same effect of losing control. It's under the carpet and edge of door sill behind the A pillar.

Does anything else act up? I had a 93 where the HVAC manual type would go to defrost mode (no vacuum) and turn on the AC compressor and the power door locks wouldn't work for a period of time--a minute or 10 minutes. I felt it was the ground buss but my wife made me trade it before I could dig in and check it.
