I have a 95 caprice classic, looking for someone with more knowledge then i, about the rear end of my car(if thats whats wrong). when i drive my car it makes a hum sound. when i let off the accelerator the noise goes away. i did check and changed the gear oil but i really had know idea what i was looking at. if anyone has some pointers or suggestions please let me know thanks.

I'm not very knowledgable on this kind of stuff either but if i remember correctly i think this means your bearings in the rear end are bad.

the noise is refered to as a whine...as the differential ring and pinion ring wears this noise will get more noticable...your discription is drive noise...

replacement of the diff oil and use of the correct type is important,,,If you have a limited slip diff this oil needs frequent replacement...when checking your level every engine oil change look at the oil quality as well as level ....if its getting dark remove rear cover clean and replace oil...

how often do you service the diff.?

Re: question about my 95 caprices

i did just change the oil in my rear end and cleaned it very well but the whine is still there. i have put about 7000 miles on it in the 2 years i've owned it and this is the first time i changed the oil in the rear end. i have no idea when it was looked at or changed before me.

well that sounds good....remember if you do live in a very cold climate the oil when below 20degf will cause the rear diff to make noise until it warms...

by replacing this diff oil you should be ok as it takes alot of miles to wear out the gears with frequent servicing,,,

how much dirt/debris did you find in the diff when you serviced it...?

that sounds good it seems, the gear oil was never replaced, as over time it does get very dark ,,,I have seen black...but not in a small vehicle as you have....I think because you found no metal particles it should last many more miles...just check for fluid condition every oil change....

I have worked on much larger vehicles and if the oil gets low with the large loads the oil will turn black and smell very bad..
