A STRANGE PROBLEM w 98 Cirrus (not even my mechanic can figure it out) HELP PLEASE!

hey all, i have the strangest problem going on with my 98 Cirrus! first problem started with my gas gauge started bouncing up and down from Full to empty. next the speedometer started bouncing up and down from 0 to 60 on the free way, and now recently the car stalls out while idling on the street, but i can start it right up again. last but not least the car started to shut off while on the freeway doing 60 mph and quickly starts itself back up again!! its possessed!! the crazy thing is there is no check engine light on, no codes, no soft codes, nothing and from time to time i can smell oil being burning. there was an oil leak a while back before the problems started, but i replaced the gaskets and there is no leaking since then. i took it to pepboys and they ran a diagnostics on the car, everything came up good, and my local mechanic checked it out and he was stumped... any ideas? please have at it and thanks for the help!!

I assume you have a Mitsubishi V6. These are wonderful when running right, but notorious for problems with the engine computer and integrated distributor/coil. Sometimes they need re-programming, other times replacement.

You are fortunate that your car has OBDII diagnostics, my '95 does not. For a hundred bucks a Mopar dealer should be able to pinpoint the problem.
