it also depends on how much you sand and polish with compound (if you do it) because that take off some paint at each time. I would say you need the correct number to correctly cover all the body and be able to word on it with compound and sand paper without hitting that cover. But you don't need to apply primer between each coat of the top color, primer is used one time to prepare the body to get paint. if you applied primer between each coat of your color you would loose the deepness of the paint and even the colorfull. (and if you sand you could find some primer instead of paint under the sanded coat ! )A little thing you could improve would be to put a drop of black in each exhaust end

Re: Nissan Skyline R35
I usually do a mist coat first then do a full primer coat to cover everything. I've rarely ever done a second primer coat. Colored coat depends on what color you use and here are some of the colors I've done and how I've found it.
Black - 1 or two coats should be enough. Yellow - one of the most difficult colors I've ever had to work with. The paint itself is transparent which means you have to apply more than 3 or 4 coats for the color to show up right. Once you spray, and you see the transparency of it, sometimes you want to spray over it again and again....well then it'll start to run. So advice for this paint is to spray once and forget about it for a few hours and do another spray. If it looks shit at the time, ignore it. If it looks like the color is too light....ignore it and do it again later on. Also, if you clear coat yellow, it WILL get a bit darker. It's a beautiful color but such a bitch to work with. White - use white primer then do a couple of coats or maybe three. Mica blue and metallic blue - they are pretty dark in terms of coloring and i've found 1 or 2 coats is more than enough. Silver leaf - 1 coat to cover everything AND DONT TOUCH THE DRIED PAINT....EVER. give 1 or 2 coat of clear to "seal" up so to speak. Any touching of the silver paint will ressult in a smudge in the finished product. Well, these are the colors I've worked with, they are all tamiya spray cans and are not cheap, which is why I use less if I can get away with it. For me, 1 can of color usually last exactly two models cars, unless it's yellow which 2 cans will do 3 models. To sand or not to sand after a coat really dpends on your spray. The first few models I did, I sprayed further away in thinner coats so it required sanding to smooth things out. Later I found that if I timed it right and sprayed it in thicker coats (sprayed closer), the finishing coat would be thicker and smooth as a real car. So thats what i've been doing ever since, spraying closer but spraying shorter. The only risk to this is of course is the run in paint if you apply too much for some types of paint. Once thats done, if the finished product is already smooth then I usually don't sand it at all, I just use the wax to polish and do a coat of clear and polish again. If they look bumpy then i'm in it for a long night of sanding....but most of the time I don't bother and just apply another thick coat and get the smooth finish and polish. I find that if I ever apply more than 4 coats of anything on t he model, it'll start to use the details. Once you get to 5 coats, the it'll just start to look horrible. So in short, 1or 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of paint and 1 coat of clear, some will disagree but meh, thats how I do mine. I've also found our that it really shouldn't be rushed, I know it's tempting to rush it through and have thhat pretty looking model sitting on your shelf but then you sacrifice quality. I've tried doing a model in one day. I think I actually got bored with waiting for the paint to dry so I left it next to the hot desk lamp to try to get the paint to dry more quickly only to find after 5 minutes the paint had tried but then the head had melted the shell..............so I had to get a new one. |

It's not a Skyline anymore. Just GT-R now. Anyways, nice build.

Re: Nissan R35 GT-R
Looks like a good build. You are a very eager builder completing your projects in 1 day, I take a couple of weeks on the colour coats alone! Race decals look fine, but it looks odd have a TRD logo on a Nissan...

Re: Nissan R35 GT-R
Yeah, why is there a TRD logo on a Nissan?
