4wheel drive not working

heres the deal 2002 durango--hubby put new alternator on, (no he didn't disconnect the battery cable first) touched a wire and sparks flew and now 4 wheel drive light is out and my -service 4 wheel drive-- light is on. Took it to a garage today and they can't find the problem yet. Thought it was just a fuse, checked something else to but nothing. Gotta bring it back in to see if its a modular. Any other ideas of what to check. After the garage had it the --service 4 wheel drive -- light is not on anymore. Would disconnecting the battery cable reset the computer ?? Not sure what to try.

Re: 4wheel drive not working

If it's anything like the old Ford Explorers were (very, very common problem), it's something you don't want to replace yourself unless you have some serious wiring skills. I'm speaking for Explorers, here, but I believe it was around $400 for parts and labor to fix mine. Probably about the same for the 'Rango.
