Where should I get my alternator?

I have no clue where I'm going to get an alternator now. I went to advance auto; they only supply 78 amp (stock) alts. Went to autozone; biggest they supply is 94 amp for an '83 305 but I want at least 120 amps. Suggestions?

Try to find a local auto electric shop, they rebuild in house and can probably build you what you want.

Re: Where should I get my alternator?

How many pullys do you have on your alternator now?
Unless you have 2, don't bother with the extra expense of a high output alternator.
I have a 78 amp on my van with a single belt. Under full charge, the belt slips and squeals a bit, unless the belt is like new and nice and tight.

I have a 94 on my Jeep, which slips a single belt regardless of what I do under max load (ie, when using a winch). I went to a double pulley system for that set up.
Frankly, unless you are using an electric winch or have mondo driving/flood lights, a 94 is perfectly adequate.

Its only a 1 pulley, but i dont understand how that matters. Do you mean that alternators with more amps are harder to turn?

Nvm..asked my mechanic and had the question asnwered. Said he could build me an alt to fit my car up to even 200 amps. HOWEVER, he said the problem is that something like that will draw 7hp! Even a 100 amp would draw 5....and the fact that i own the bogged down 305, i really have NO horsepower to spare.
