5sfe water pump died engine damage?

I have a 94, 4 cyl with 210K. I believe I had seal go bad in the water pump. Driving on highway at night when it happened think engine was run dry or nearly dry of coolant. Temperature guage was going hot then cold then hot (thought it was guage issue; it wasn't) eventually temp guage pegged at hot. Engine light came on, started getting valve clatter and engine died.

Had it towed home. Engine turned over but would not start. No spark. Pulled distributor, tested ok put back in. Eventually found blown AM2 30 Amp fuse and no coolant in radiator. Filled radiator, replaced fuse and it started.

Currently water spewing from front bottom area next to timing belt cover. Running rough with valve clatter. Debating my next move...

Thinking that i am looking at timing belt, water pump and some oil seals (think I had an oil leak behind TB cover before this incident) minimally. Wondering about other damage from running hot? Anyone have thoughts on the valve clatter...overheating damage or timing issue?

Anyway wondering if I've lost the battle here...

Re: 5sfe water pump died engine damage?

Could just be the timing belt slipped, throwing the timing off and creating the valve clatter/rough running. If you can keep coolant in it long enough you could check and adjust the timing to see if it clears. If it doesn't you could do a compression check to reveal damaged valves etc. Sounds like you are correct in your thinking that you need a new timing belt (TB), pump and seals. Once the pump errupts like that, coolant gets on the TB, making a TB change automatic. Last year I had no choice but to let a dealership change the same parts on my daughter's 94 2.2 ltr. She was miles away headed home from college. Wound up costing $1000. Of coarse they screwed up the TB alignment when they installed it so had to have it redone at another dealership back home - at no charge.

Re: 5sfe water pump died engine damage?

Have to agree with RIP on this one. Same thing happened to my 94 2.2 205k where I forgot to change the water pump every 40-60 k mi per my mechanic no matter how good "it looks." Basically water pump (WP) gave way which let all coolant out, shredded timing belt (TB), etc. Poured coolant in radiator, but leaked right out near WP. Would not crank (bad sign per my mechanic), but after tow to mechanic, it did. Replaced WP and TB, but mechanic warned me that there could some head damage since it ran hot for so long. Head damage may come up in the next few months or never he said. So far 8k mi later no issues, leaks, etc. It only cost me around $350 for the TB and WP.
Next move should be at least replacing TB, WP and I would do the t-stat while working on this. Check your radiator hoses. If your top hose has never been replaced, it is defnitely due and would recommend it.
Keep us posted.
