Musky-dank smell from AC vents.
Getting warm here 80 degrees today. 02 MGM 44K mi when I turn on A/C it smells like Draculas cellar, real musky-moldy-mildew smelling not pleasant. Not like a dead mouse, just a moldy smell. From what I read it's a moldy evaporator coil or the AC drain hose is stopped up. Like to check the drain and make sure it's open but don't know where to begin to look so help with it's where abouts would be muchly apprecaited. Also read about spraying some aerosol mold killer in the cabin air intake but not where where that is either.
I found this on a VW chat forum, comments appreciated. "This happens to a lot of vehicles, Using the a/c on recirculate all the time will cause this, The fix is simple, pour house hold ammonia into a spray bottle , start the engine and a/c, spray the ammonia into the area where the a/c fan is and let it draw the ammonia into the a/c, also spray the interior lightly, close all windows and set a small bowl of ammonia in the floor, shut off the engine and give it a couple of hours just sitting, then open it up and let it air out. THIS FIX CAME FROM GENERAL MOTORS AND FORD, it works on any vehicle , Hey it also works in your home for odors." I know we should leave the control on VENT to allow fresh air circulation in the cabin when engine is off & car sitting. If I can find the drain and intake air vent I should be able to solve the odor problem. I called Ford place and said it is a common thing and want $150. because must remove plenum to spray the evaporator coils to clean them and kill the mold. |
