Scan Tools: Actron CP9185 or AUTERRA or other

Now that I'm troubleshooting my own diagnostics more and more, I'm interested in a scan tool.

I want more than just reading the codes from a CEL (Advance Auto can do that for me for free), I want a scan tool that will allow me to capture/analyze live data to trace the problems to the root cause easier.

Any suggestions?

Hand-held or PC-based?

Actron or other if hand held?

AUTERRA or other solution if PC based?

What type(s) of car(s) are you planning to use this with? Domestic only with OBD-II or imports? If imports, what types of imports? Is having access to the enhanced codes important? Any chance of needing to scan pre-OBD-II cars? Is there a price limitation?

I've used the AutoXray EZ-Scan 5000 and was pleased with its capabilities. It can quickly read codes, can also do the domestic pre-OBD-II cars, and has datastream functionality. Additionally, you can purchase access to the enhanced OBD-II codes for various manufacturers. The price seemed pretty reasonable compared with its competition.

I haven't used the similar Actron scan tools. The Actrons seemed a bit less expensive with similar features. I believe they are part of the same parent company now too.

However, I still rely heavily on my OTC Genisys scan tool. This tool also adds access to the body computers, transmission computers, ABS, airbag systems, climate control, audio, security, etc. Of course all the features come at a price, and model year updates are not free. I've since "loaned" my AutoXray to a friend who's had it over a year now. It was quicker than the OTC for just scanning codes, but the capability is quite limited compared with the Genisys.

Thanks for responding. Definitely only 1996 and newer. I've got an '01 Ford, 01 Chevrolet, and an '08 Subaru and planning on adding a 2010 Toyota to the mix next year.

My immediate need is to troubleshoot a P0171 and P0172 (both banks lean) code that keeps coming up. I want to use this scan tool to evaluate the function of my O2 sensors and MAF sensor.

My longer-term goal is to have this on hand with any future problems for my vehicles and to read codes for friends and co-workers (they help me with stuff they can do, so I could return the favor).

I'd like the hand-held scanner, but want to ensure I can see graphs of time-varient real-time data to help diagnose sensor readings and/or malfunctions. I also want to ensure upgradeability if necessary.

I like the thought of a PC based unit to store data, plot charts, etc. However, it would seem a bit more trouble to carry around in the car during diagnosis-trips.

I agree that the PC-based tools, while cost effective and often loaded with features, are not quite as convenient or quick as a dedicated scan tool.

You'd probably find the Actron would fit your needs nicely. I'm not familiar with the Auterra.

Any chance the immediate need is for your Ford? If so, you should check the vehicle specific forum. Those two codes are pretty common on a few models of Fords and have some pretty well-documented fixes.

I have been looking at the Ford forum and have been guided toward a few possible solutions, but none kept my CEL at bay.

Cleaned MAF sensor, checked O2 connections for corrosion, searched for a vacume leak, etc.

I thought some data might help guide me closer to the solution.

Intake gaskets, PCV valve, hoses, and elbows, and possibly the DPFE sensor would all be areas to also consider.

Okay, I may have gotten rid of the problem causing these codes (cracked elbow on the PCV pipe (not on the valve end, but on the other end where it re-enters the engine).

I'm leaning toward the Actron CP9185 for future use. If anybody has any other reccomended hand-held scan tools that will provide access to live data as well as read/reset codes, let me know.
