turbo charger

If one were to put a turbo charger on a stock engine, would the engine be able to withstand everything or would one have to replace everything in the engine and give it stronger rods and crank and such?

Re: turbo charger

Depends on many things.
Primarily, what engine and how much boost you plan to force down it's neck.

Most non-turbo diesels can be easily turbocharged and handle around 10psi boost. Some double that.
Petrols are more susceptible to problems resulting from detonation (boost with high compression) and fuel leaning out (can't deliver enough fuel to match the extra air density). But you could get away with very low boost levels on many engines without internal work. There are also some engines you'd need a hole in the head to turbo without internal work.

Its a 4 cylinder 1.6 in a 91 corolla. I don't suppose it would have to be much boost but I thought of atleast enough that I can tell there is a boost. Any suggestions?

Re: turbo charger

The hard part is doing all the fabrication to make the turbo fit and after all that work and expense the car would still only have maybe 120 hp and be slower than most minivans.

If it is a 4age 1.6ltr Corolla then it had 130+hp out of the box (some had 160hp in Japan).
6psi of boost is a bolt on mod with manifolds, turbo etc from a variety of manufacturers and then your making an easy 170+hp.
Do the internals, add more boost and add more fuel and 200+hp is quite doable.

Not bad for a car that only weighs around 1000kg.

If you're really unlucky it's a 4AFE, the "fuel efficient" version which couldn't outrun a snail with a sore foot.
If so, there should be a 4AGE that will almost bolt in place.
