Cheers for looking, but I have a Japanese market car, imported into NZ in the mid 90s.
It is the first of a new face lift model only sold in Japan (no pop up head lights) and uses an engine management system that wasn't sold in the US/UK/Europe until I think 1990-91.
There is a VSS unit on the back of the trans, on top of the power steering speed sensor. And there definitely wasn't a cable going into the back of the gauge cluster when I removed it last weekend

Not wrong, you just looked in the wrong book. The right book is all in Japanese anyway

I still havn't figured it out.

I want to pull the VSS and check it before I replace the gauge, as the VSS should be cheaper, I won't have to worry about the ODO being out of whack, which can cause issues here.

The problem is the gear shift cable and a major coolant line all run over one of the VSS bolts, so they have to be moved first, which I am to lazy to do at the moment.
