urgent problem shifter cable broke on jimmy

here's my problem.the jimmy is a 1999 4.3L 4WD.i tried to put it in reverse and the shifter just slid sloppy back and forth.the shifter cable is broke.anyways before i could get back to the vehicle it was towed.the place that towed it is not going to let me replace the cable in their tow yard plus i'm a woman and i don't know if i can replace the cable myself.i was going to put it in drive by moving the shift lever on the transmission but then it won't start in drive.is there anything i can do to enable it to start in drive so i can get it home and then get the cable replaced?????please any suggestions will be greatly appreciated...

Re: urgent problem shifter cable broke on jimmy

Can you talk the towing company into helping you get it started?
Yes there is a way to do it.
But it is a dangerous operation.
There is danger of someone under it putting it in gear of getting run over.
It takes two people working together to do it.
If you have good towing insurance they may pay for a tow home or to the nearest garage for repair.

Or if you do hot wire the starter it to start in gear remember when you park it gear it will roll on unlevel ground.
Good luck and be careful.
