96 Bonny- stalls around long curves- now
So two months ago I put a new fuel pump in my buddy's 96 Bonny- now when gas tank is low- on long exit/entrance ramps- the fuel gauge goes to empty- alert dings and the engine will soon stall out. Car starts right back up once leveled out. So the question is- what changed- did I miss something in the orientation or placement of the new strainer (sock) or could a tank baffle come loose inside the gas tank when I dropped the tank? Or is there a connection where the sending unit thinks the car is almost empty and shuts down the fuel pump. This is bugging me as to what happened- not sure if I want to pull the tank down again. Thanks

Re: 96 Bonny- stalls around long curves- now
What brand is the fuel pump?If it is an Airtex or Carter, you threw your money away.A Delphi pump is the best for GMs,from the dealer or your nearest Carquest parts store.GMs do have problems with sending units and you can get just the sending unit from the dealer and bring in the insurance slip. The dealer needs the vin off the insurance slip to get the right part.Under the driver's side front kick plate is a ground splice, check it for corrossion covered with tar.If this is the case, remove and clean it up very good

Quote:
First is the sock on the pump may be oriented in the wrong direction Second and I think more likely, the Baffles in the tank may have cracked and or separated and allows the fuel to run away from the pump during on ramp or off ramp sessions... I don't think its anything you did wrong... We have replaced tanks on the Bonnevilles and other H and C bodies for this very reason... A Buddies 93 SSEi used to have that exact problem, a new tank cured it.. My SE has never had that issue... My Van at current has this very issue on sharp turns at 1/4 tank.. As the tank is large enough I simply fill it up when it gets to 1/3.. For the time being tell your friend to keep the tank better than 1/3 and he should be ok till he decides to drop it again to replace the tank or check the sock on the pump... |

Do this simple check, see if the driver's side window goes up and down.If it does not,the ground splice under the driver's side kick plate is corroded up with tar and needs to be cleaned up
