Power Steering Rack

Anyone know the mustang year/model or the ford part number for the power steering rack?

On the AGR unit I see they have a 15:1 and a 20:1 are you sure ours is a 15:1?

I run the 15:1 AGR rack on my AI car. If you just need lines for the ford rack on the Panoz, tell the Ford dealer it a rack from a 1996 - 1998 Mustang Cobra. Except for the internals, all the Mustang (and AGR racks) racks from 94-03 are the same. I blew a hard line at the track once (on a Sunday of course), went to the local Autozone and bought a rebuilt rack for a 94 GT ($80), stipped off the line I needed and made the afternoon race.

So anyone know if one year is better than another? I have some serious play in my rack and was going to buy another one to swap it out, found some remanufactured ones on ebay for $100 will the 94 GT rack be as good as what we have now?

Re: Power Steering Rack

I've heard we have a Ford Motorsports rack... whatever that means. I know mines only like 1.75 turns lock to lock.

Re: Power Steering Rack

I think the Cobra racks are 1.5 ratio were as a Mustang rack is 1.8 ratio. When you go to the parts store the Parts Man/Woman/whatever should be able to tell you what ratio any given rack is.

Brian the racks on our cars have a stop installed at the end of the tie rod that limits travel. When replacing the rack you need to install the old tie rods and spacers.

Re: Power Steering Rack

So, some things I've learned....

no one seems to have ever heard of a "ford motorsports" rack There is a ford racing rack and pinion, but we definitely do not have one of those.
All the V8 cars used a 15.7:1 ratio rack and the V6's(and ones equiped with standard steering option used an 18:1(i believe)

the 1998 svt cobra used a 14.7:1 rack

now some good news, possibly the 2003-2004 cobrac rack is a "special" close ratio rack My rack had some play in it so I ordered one of those, will let you know what i find when it comes in!

Re: Power Steering Rack

Eric,

I replaced my rack a few weeks ago. Ordered one for a 94-95 mustang. Everything was the same except for the input shaft. I think it was D shaped and needed to be round. Backed up to a 93 model to get the correct one.I not sure what the later model imput shafts look like.

Re: Power Steering Rack

looks like the 94-95 uses the D shaped input shaft and the 96+ uses a round(what we need) the 96-04 uses the round shaft and apparently so does the 93..

info on the 2003 cobra rack
"The SVT Cobra's rack-and-pinion steering system gets a new, low-lash intermediate shaft in 2003, and a higher rate steering gear bushing. These changes improve steering feel by helping reduce play in the system."

So hopefully it works out!

Re: Power Steering Rack

Ok, so update AGAIN, I got the 04 Cobra rack installed, I did have to buy a new UV joint for the input steering shaft. The 94+ Mustangs use the "94+ V shaft, also known as the pyramid shaft"

but now my steering is like BUTTER, no play, and smooth as glass, but man what a PITA the rack was to remove though!

Re: Power Steering Rack

The PN# for the rack i used was a SPR-ZM 2004 Cobra Mustang rack, the UV joint was a Borgeson 114955 - 3/4 DD x 3/4 V it is stainless and very high quality.

Also, I noted on Devins car, he has what looks like a stock mustang steering shaft that does NOT have interchangeble UV joints, so check yours before you order
