97 grand am gt brakes

mt grand am when I brake stops the car fine but if I am at a traffic light and holding my foor on the brake the pedal will eventually goto th efloor if I pump it it goes hard again then again will eventually end up at the floor. first time braking is fine but then goes soft I tried bleeding the brakes but same issue any one any ideas

sounds like a brake line leak to me, or more likely, a bad master cylinder. possibly a slave cylinder.

Classic master cylinder wear issue. Replace it and you should be fine.

when I replace the cylinder there are line bleaders at the cylinder will that be the only brake bleeding i need to do or will i need to go around each wheel.

do i need to mount the cylinder back with the bolts at a certin torque.

you have to bleed each wheel. I am not so sure about pontiac, but I know on some cars you have to have a scanner tool to open the antilock brake components to bleed them through the wheel cylinders.

Actually, you may be able to get by with only bleeding at the master cylinder. You need to do that first anyway, so see how the pedal feels then, and if it's good, I'd say you're done.

The Grand Am does not require a scan tool to bleed the brakes.

Good point, but it is nearly impossible to get all the air out at the master cylinder when the line is taken loose further down stream from the bleeder.
