86 CRX fast idle when moving slow when stopped
Hi all,
I have a bit of a strange problem and I'm hoping someone has had this one before. My daughter has an 86 CRX with a standard carb. When moving the idle stays up at 2-2500 rpm. As soon as you stop it drops down to a proper idle. It seems to happen only when it's moving in a forward gear. If you're moving in a forward gear and then shift into neutral it still stays high until you stop the car and then it drops down. It doesn't happen in reverse and if you start rolling in neutral and rev the engine the idle drops back to normal. It's like there's some mechanical thing that shifts back when the car moves and keeps the engine at a high rev unitl you stop, then it shifts forward and the idle drops. All the hoses are on and I've checked for vacuum leaks. Anybody wanna guess? Thanks |

Re: 86 CRX fast idle when moving slow when stopped
Old thread, but maybe I can help, although this is kind of dangerous to do.
Put the car on stands or something that it won't move from. Lift the front end off the ground, making sure the tires aren't making contact with anything, start the car, put it in gear, and "drive" then put it in neutral... it should still do what you're saying.. and you might have an easier time diagnosing it this way than riding around w/ the hood open and having someone else drive while you're under the hood... Just a thought.
