I know it's the alternator but...

So I've read the battery and brake light coming on is more than likely the alternator, but I never saw anyone say anything about losing the power steering when that happens; which is what happened to me. Is that usual or something in addition too?

It was the serpentine belt.

No, a pulley had to be replaced and the belt let loose.
