Pass window and rear wiper do not work Related? 98 SEL

I got a 98 Sel in which the Passenger window and the Rear wiper do not work. The dealer has said the motors in both are dead. Also wanted $1000+ to replace both. Come-on!!!!!! Local shop bid $350. Better but---- Anyway could these be related?

Also which panel is easier to remove to check out the motors of either. Hotwire or check the incoming power?

Could some lead me through or direct me to knowledge base of removing the panels?

Thanks for reading this.

Welcome to AFs!

To remove the door pannels.....remove any visible fasteners....the pannel has clips molded into it. You need to lift the pannel to unhook these clips. If you pull you'll break the clips off......(I learned this the hard way)

If you're good with DC motors, I found the problem with the window motors is that water gets in and the brushes stick in their guides and do not conduct power to the comutator.

I found on the rear wiper that the shaft that goes through the glass bindes due to lack of lube.

I was able to pull both motors apart and clean them and they're working today.

Regards

Dan

Re: Pass window and rear wiper do not work Related? 98 SEL

Hey Dan,

We spoke a few times before, but I have the same issue with the rear wiper not moving correctly. it travels a bit, stops, travels some more, stops and so on. It does not wipe a whole pass at a time. I took it out and cleaned the brushes (they appeared to be stuck in the holders) and things got better, but only briefly. I never did lube the centre shaft. Any thoughts on why the DC motor wouldn't overcome a bit of stickiness? With DC, it should load up the current and either move it, or blow a fuse (thats the beauty of DC). I also cleaned out the commutator bars since they were plugged up with carbon from the brushes, but asid from lubricating the shaft, I am not sure what else to try.

Does anyone know if the apllied voltage to the motor is just a timer? IE it applies it for a few seconds, then off, then on? I ask because this may verify that the reason mine is not travelling a full stoke is because the shaft is sticky and causing it to move out of sequence due to the extra time to build up enough juice to overcome.

Andrew

My first thought is the motor is thermo protected. (I can't remember if this wiper motor is thermo protected or not.) The output shaft may be stiff from the lack of lube and the thermo breaker opens because of the motor drawing too many amps. The breaker cools and closes and the wipper advances until the breaker opens once again.

Regards

Dan
