Re: 99 montana
There seems to be a step missing in your programming method. Remove the fuse:
![]() This is from the '99 manual. If it doesn't work this way, I can post the diagnostic chart for the BCM which will test the receiver and the BCM. John |

Re: 99 montana
I looked at the diagnostic trouble code charts for the BCM (body control module). It sounds to me like its telling you the type module you own is 1 and a code 8 is set in the ecm.
It should beep (and flash) the type module it is everytime you put it into program mode. After that, if any codes are set, it will beep (and flash) them. A code 8 is an RFA link circuit open or shorted to B+ or ground. Not very helpful at this point, but I'll post more as I get more time later. Could you post why you are doing this? Is there some problem you want to resolve, or do you just want to program in a new remote? I'm trying to understand if there is some feature that is not working or not. John |

Re: 99 montana
I reviewed the service manual on the BCM and keyless entry. There is a rather extensive trouble shooting chart you need to follow before coming to any conclusions. The remote radio receiver connects to the BCM via a data line which sounds like it may be faulty, (code 8 above), but before I scan 6 pages or so of the manual in, why don't you post the actual problem you are having other than entering program mode?

Re: 99 montana
I believe you are getting a trouble code 8. This indicates the data line running from the receiver to the BCM (body computer module) is not working. This would mean that no remote keys are currently working. Is that the case? If so, you need to gain access to the receiver. If not, and some keys work remotely, we need to get into the service manual in more detail.

Re: 99 montana
that is exactly the problem
none of the keys will program so with that being said we need to get to the receiver then i would assume where the problem lies out of curiosity where is the bcm located im thinking that i can fart around there and look for a grounding issue or something again thanks john |

Re: 99 montana
You want to get to the remote key receiver--that's under the trim panel on top of the instrument panel. The top trim panel snaps off by lifting it up. There are 4 clips spaced along the front edge. These will snap up and you can pull the top panel out. You have to remove the daytime sensor and security light from the panel before you pull it away.
![]() Under the center of the trim panel is the receiver. It may be defective or the connector is corroded (spilled liquids find their way in there). ![]() The BCM is located under the IP, on the right side. Its not likely the problem as it controls many other functions (like seat belt warnings, and door adjar, etc) and is responding to you with a code 8 about the remote key data line. Take a look at the key receiver first. If nothing can be learned from that, I'll post the BCM test proceedure, but I doubt that's where the problem is. John |
