1990 honda accord
There are two main problems right now. First it will only start when I have the jumper cables hooked up to it. Usually it will run after they are removed but I wasn’t having any luck this afternoon. If you have an extra car battery maybe we could try to swap those out just to rule that out. Secondly, when I was driving it on a consistent basis, every once in a while it would start to buck and lose power. It would regain power after a second and then usually be fine the rest of the drive. I assumed it was some sort of short and given the current non-starting issue it still leads to believe it is electrical. But I am not a mechanic. Let me know when works best for you tomorrow and I’ll be sure to be here or if you have any more questions.
can anyone help with this or give me some direction to go would be very much appreciated. thanks |

Re: 1990 honda accord
What does start mean? Will it always turn over but not start or won't even turn over? Me thinks either you need a new battery or need to clean the battery posts/cable connections. Or you have a charging issue. Try to getting it starting on a consistent basis before trying to solve other problems.

Re: 1990 honda accord
could the two problems be related? It is just so strange that when i start the car and get to driving down the road it will buck and loose power and then when i gave it gas it would get through the problem and take off, i was thinking it was electrical because it would loose power and then take off again.
thanks |

Re: 1990 honda accord
Could be. If the alternator is not providing enough power to the the electronics, it could stall. There is a lot going on here. Solve the first problem and then see what happens.

Re: 1990 honda accord
ok something new is happening with the 1990 honda accord.. it wont stay started unless i have it hooked up to the jumper cables? this is new as before it would take the jump and stay started and i could drive it now it wont stay started after i unhook the jumper cables?
this sounds like either the battery or the alternator? am i wrong or am i missing something here. thanks |

Re: 1990 honda accord
I'm still think that there is a problem with the battery and/or battery cable connections. If the battery and connections were good, the car would run for a period of time without the alternator. Take the battery out and go to a aftermarket parts store and get it tested. Then look at the battery connections. They need to be clean and on the battery tight. You could save some time if you would buy a cheap voltmeter which could be used for some of the troubleshooting of this problem.

Re: 1990 honda accord
ok guys i took the battery in and had it checked and they said it was bad. I bought one and put it in and then had them check the alternator with the new battery and the car running and they said it was working fine. I hope...
I just bought this car and wanted to know what fluids and other things I should change. any help would be appreciated and thanks for helping me with the earlier problem. |
