Hi all, Im new to the website. Im having problems with my 97 chevy lumina. 3.1 v6. The problems started with a faulty ignition moodule. I changed that and it went bad again. It wouldnt start hot. I found out a bad crankcase position sensor kept frying my icms. My last icm made the car run so bad it fouled up my catalytic converter and blew the exhaust off the block. I repaired that and replaced the CKP and ICM, now it turns over but will not start. The EGR valve is full of brown thick liquid gunk? I know bad catalytic converters can foul up an egr, is this why it wont start now?

Fouled EGR? With carbon and gas, which is all that should get in there. Oil possibly, maybe coolant. This don't sound good; check compression. If it's good, check the oil for coolant mixed in. Check the coolant level too. How did the exhaust look when warmed up, the last time you saw it? Post back up on this... |

I have only now gotten around to replacing the EGR valve. Mine too was full of brown sludge. I think it could be oil. Could over-filling your oil cause this? When I changed the EGR valve (after a ridiculous easter-egg hunt on my 3.4L v6) the motor seemed to improve in smoothness and quietness once warmed up. But all the tubes and connectors seemed precarious and prone to leaking vacuum or coming off. I am not impressed with this sloppy arrangement, susceptable to vibration. But I am still having problems with cold starts/idling in the morning. I am thinking that the 'morning' behaviour may quickly foul my sparkplugs and lead to more foolishness. The EGR replacement did NOT solve the cold-start problems, just the running while warm. I am hoping for more info/experience on these matters.

Re: Egr?? Need Help!!!
I'll be more specific sorry. It gets spark and compression fine. The ign mod and crank shaft position sensor are brand new. Its not getting fuel, I can't hear the fuel pump working when I turn the key on. The car will run with gas in carb, injectors working. Bad fuel pump maybe? or is something electrical the problem. anyone have this same problem and fixed it??

Re: Egr?? Need Help!!!
Yeah this does sound like a fuel pump. In mine its in the gastank. I think you might be able to access it from the trunk, otherwise you may have to drop the tank.
You should be able to hear the fuel pump whirring for a few seconds when you turn the key on. If this isn't fixed by wiggling wires or unplugging and replugging connectors, then maybe you need a fuel pump.
