95 accord odometer and mileage dont work

my 95 accord's speedometer and mileage stopped working. It was on and off for a day, now just not rolling. The D4 (drive) starts blinking after about a min of driving. I'm assuming the speed sensor or need a new odometer cluster? Thanks.

I swapped the odometer cluster and it still didn't work, so it's probably the VSS (vehicle speed sensor).

if the vss is bad then your speedometer will not work also. my odometer stopped working as well but a few nice wacks on he cluster made it start working again.my speedomter never stopped working. odd that you replaced the cluster (which i didnt feel ike doing) and it still doesnt work

I think its the speed sensor. As a suggestion in troubleshooting, if you narrow the problem down to two areas that may be defective, you should choose the easiest and/or the least expensive one to swap out first. The instrument cluster does not fit either of the two previous conditions.

duh on my part. i didnt remember reading inthe initial post about the speedometer not working as well. my odometer stopped working but speedometer continued working fine. not sure why you would replace the cluster before trying a new sensor. doesnt make sense since it takes about 14 seconds to swap out the speed sensor and you could get one from a yard for about 5 bucks

The easiest way I know of checking VSS is to use your cruise control. If it works it mostl likely your cluster's circuit board.

Thanks for all the replies. I swapped the cluster to test because I had two identical cars. It was not the odometer cluster because it worked in the other car and vice versa. So it might have been an electrical problem somewhere else. But it has since been working again and I haven't done anything to it. Hope it stays working. I'll try the cruise control method next time if it goes down. Thanks.

Well guys, this problem came back, and I tried the cruise control and it did not work. The D4 blinks, odometer, speedometer and cruise control no worky. And I have not changed anything yet (but VSS is probably my guess). Any suggestions? Thanks.
