2004 instrument cluster issue and idiot lights out

This is my neighbors 04 Envoy, I am trying to help her. About a week ago the speedo and tach were acting goofy. Then a couple more gauges. She said she heard a slight buzz coming from the dash. I started the truck and the speedo was stuck at 40, tach and all other guages stuck at 0 (I am pretty sure the odometer was displayed as well as the gear indication, but not sure). Well I looked on the net and saw that several GM vehicles were having issues with the stepper motors. So I had her order 6 new ones from the guy on ebay. Later that day I drove her truck and everything worked. I told her to fill up her tank and then just reset the trip in case her gas gauge quit again. Well the stepper motors came in, and the same day she ran out of gas. I asked about setting the trip, and come to find out nothing on the IPC works anymore (except the check engine light when the key is turned on, then it goes out as normal). I did a few things this morning. 1st, I found out from this board that there is a ground issue with g108 and ipc issues, I found it, cleaned it, and nothing. Next I took the
cluster off and looked at the board, nothing. No noticeable hot or burn
spots. I wigged the connection to the cluster significantly when I put
the cluster back in, and that did not help. I then went to the ipc fuse
(#24). I removed the fuse and got the exact same indications on the
cluster (nothing worked, except check engine light when the truck is startred, then that goes out as normal), I thought I figured it out. But no, I swapped that fuse with another 10amp fuse and still had the problem (I swapped with the a/c fuse, and it worked so I assume both fuses are good).

Any ideas? I am trying to save my neighbor a trip to the dealer as it
is past 70K, but I don't think I can fix it.

Welcome to Af. Did you check the ground on the l/s of engine block also. If all is ok, the cluster is the problem, as they have had trouble with them as it is. BTW, good work in your diagnostic procedure. Of course this assumes the cluster is being powered up.

I checked the ground. I think it might be the harness to the cluster. I am going to try to check the harness tomorrow. I was thinking I'd use one of the screw drivers with the light bulb in them that check for power.

This ain't the same problem as the ignition switch solenoid is it? They fixed it by 2004???

The TSB was posted around here somewhere, with years affected...

Could be if the cluster is not powered.
