84 Caprice V8 350 5.7 Emission question
Ok, I have a 84 Caprice V8/5.7/350 and I had the engine rebuilt. I bought a chrome package for it(vavle covers, timing chain cover ,air filter). My Air pump/smug pump dosn`t fit in the pulley`s any more but the car runs. Do I really need it?
Also on the passenger side thier is a metal flexy hose that goes from the exhaust manifiold to the air cleaner assembly on the old air filter, but the new chrome one dosn`t have a connection for it. So can I just cap the pipe off that is coming from the the exhaust manifold? |

Re: 84 Caprice V8 350 5.7 Emission question
if i can remember correctly that flex pipe is only coming off of a heat sheild on the exaust manifold into the snorkel on the air cleaner the purpose of this is to heat the incoming air during cold weather start ups after the engine warms up it should open
in my case i'd rather leave it off it serves no real purpose in my opinoin about your emission question i'd check with your local DMV to see when the cut off date for emissions and know if you have to get it tested or not most areas if a car is roughly 20 to 25 years old you don't have to get it tested

If the temperature gets below 50 deg F you will get stalling on engine warm up without the air cleaner to manifold hot air tube... this tube in the cold climates is a must have part...because of the below 20deg f temps here I insulated the tube and replaced the rotten shield on the manifold with s/steel...better MPG and performance in cold temps... your air pump is a device that pumps air into the exhaust gases.this aids the cat to remove pollutants when the cat is cold...the check valve will need removal as well and capped off...this removal may be illegal so check for this at your inspection center.. |

well i just bought my caprice and its a 1989 and it was from a licenced massacusetts inspection guy and i asked him about this, plus i work for a chevy dealership and they said the same thing. most people wont know this yet cause it just changed. here is a link to massachusetts emissons and safty checks. some has changed as of Oct. 1 2008 http://www.vehicletest.state.ma.us/about_howchange.html
