O2 and Catalytic questions
Hi all, last week I ran over metal plate that constuction worker put on the street and it tore off my pre-cat O2 sensor and mangled up the Catalytic converter due to my lowered suspension with 5 people in the car
![]() The next day I took my car to the shop and saw the my entire exhaust was pushed back at least 2 inches. I had the muffler guy reweld everything for me. I also had him install a hi-flo cat (not a hallow test pipe.) My concern is that the OEM cat has secondary O2 sensor right in the middle of the cat (between 2 ceramic meshes) and my new replacement was installed right before the cat (before first ceramic mesh.) Would this make any difference for smog? I hate to not pass smog since I live in California, they are super strict about it. Please let me know, no guessing please, but if anyone has knowledge about smog please help me.

Re: O2 and Catalytic questions
The muffler shop by law would be in big trouble if they violated Cali's strict caty laws I'm sure your fine, but call him and ask him to show you the test he ran. He should have tested the new system. And by the way those caty's are worth over a 100.bones at the scrap yard or used part yard, no joke. Me thinks he made lots o' money on that transaction.

Re: O2 and Catalytic questions
Yes, it will make a differencre depending on the year. If you have 2 O2 sensors, they have to be placed properly because the ECU compares the pre to the secondary Cat sensor to determine how well your cat is working. If the sensors are both pre, then the cat will be reported as not working.

Re: O2 and Catalytic questions
He doesn't have two oxygen sensors and by law the muffler guy HAD to test it before you left cuz he could lose his license to practice mufflering.

Re: O2 and Catalytic questions
By his own statement, he sez he has two O2 sensors. Muffler shops do not have the ability to test exhaust emissions after cat installations. But they do have the responsibility to install compatible equipment for your model. Muffler shops are more interested in checking for leaks and noise then anything else.

Re: O2 and Catalytic questions
Hey folks thanks for replies. I do have two oxygen sensors. One at the manifold and one right in the middle of the CAT. The shop that installed my CAT didn't provide me the CAT, I brought it in to have it installed but I'm just not sure if there is big different if the secondary sensor is not in between the platinum mesh. Right now I have the 2nd sensor installed before the mesh but I do have an additional bung hole after the mesh too. I wish I have on in the middle and I believe that would solve my concerns. Let me know if anyone have any idea.
I'm going to muffler shop today and will ask them. I'll post any answer that I'll get.
