94 Probe GT with AT shift problems

My 1994 Probe GT with automatic transmission and 72,000 miles appears to be stuck in Park. I started the car the other day and shifted into Drive. The car started moving backward as if I were in Reverse. I checked the shifter, and the car was really in Drive. I shifted back into Park, then into Reverse. The car started to move backward, so I shifted back into Drive. The car would not move. I put the car back into Park, stopped the engine, rocked the car back-and-forth, and restarted the engine. The shifter moves through the range, but the car appears to be stuck in a perpetual state of Park. My first thought is that a linkage broke somewhere, but I have no idea where to even begin to look. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Check under center console (very likely break point)

Thanks for the reply. Actually, the linkage under the hood was the culprit. The cheesy plastic bushing inside the shift link cable deep-sixed, and the cable disconnected from the linkage altogether. We disassembled the transmission linkage, drilled and tapped the link pin, milled a new nylon bushing for the cable, and locktited and screwed the whole thing back together. Good (better) than new.
