Re: smog pump?

Do you mean the EVAP system leak detect pump? It's under the van. The connections on it or the EVAP canister are a common sourse for leaks. What area are you hearing the hiss from?

no this is under the hood,in the back with the drive belt operating it.when i turn it off,it just sounds like air escaping from it,it only takes about 10 secs for what ever it is to drain..(my shade tree mech bro in law says its a smog pump)...

Re: smog pump?

No smog pump on your car, in fact I don't remember a smog pump on any car for years. The only things back by the fire wall that are run by the drive (serpentine) belt are the alternator and power steering pump.

Re: smog pump?

Gotta agree with Bear. It's not a smog pump. Can you post a pic?

Re: smog pump?

ok,yep it is a power steering pump.......traced it myself...now i am not sure if the sound is actually coming from it though...it would not set off a emissions leak.gross code though would it?oh, and it is 3.3 engine....there is a long cyclinder looking thing right by it,is that the leak detection pump?and will they make a sound like (a tire leaking air)for lack of a better desciption..only hear it when i turn the engine off.

My 96 Gr Caravan doesn't have one. I bought the van new in California. I've worked on several others in California. None had one. Can you find a parts listing for a smog pump for any 3rd 4th or 5th generation Chrysler minivan? Maybe even a 1st or 2nd gen? I know some antiquated emissions systems still use them. Just not these vans.

Re: smog pump?

If a 2000 Impala has a smog pump it is because it was a dirty engine from the beginning of the design. The only way to clean up what comes out the tailpipe was to add a AIR INJECTION PUMP. Last Chrysler that I remember to have one was the V10 pickup with a cast iron block eng.

Just a gee wiz question. I know little about these pumps. I've never delt with one so maybe you can clarify. I'm assuming a smog pump and an air injection pump are one in the same. The term "smog pump" is just a tagged term so to speak, correct?
