Silly Harmonic Balancer, Crankshaft Pulley quesion

I have pulled the engine out of my 97 SL2 and striping it down to take to a rebuilder. I wanted to get the crankshaft pulley off, I have applied and ridiculous amount of torque to the bolt and it has not moved. So my question is this. Is this bold right hand or left hand thread. I assumed it was a right hand thread.

Thanks

It is right hand. It's just stuck. Have an air impact?

Impact did not do it either. That being said it is not the greatest impact wrench existence. Thanks at least I know I am not making it tighter.

Some PB Blaster over night may help. It will come loose eventually

I'm a believer in PB Blaster. I was amazed when I sprayed some king pin retainer nuts and that stuff worked it's way clear thru the nut and thru the retainer to the other side.

I did get the vibration damper off. It took a braker bar and a three foot length of steal pipe as a torque amplifier. I though the breaker bar would break but it did. I am not sure how much PB Blaster helped but it did not hurt.

Re: Silly Harmonic Balancer, Crankshaft Pulley quesion

I have a pretty high quality impact gun with a massive air tank, and i was quite surprised how long it took for the bolt to come loose. So its not surprising that it needed that pipe haha. Glad you got it off tho!

Re: Silly Harmonic Balancer, Crankshaft Pulley quesion

They must use mil-spec thread locker on that bolt! I estimate it took 500 lbs/ft to undo it when I tried, on our 92SL2. I was jumping on the end of a pipe about 5 ft out from the 18" long extension I had on the 3/4" drive heavy duty 6 point socket. I used a jackstand to support the end of the 18" extension.
To keep the engine from turning, I had one of my sockets that I found would jam nicely between one of the torque converter bolts and the side of the bell housing access 'window'.
I should get myself a 1/2" drive air driven impact wrench - that might have done it.
