proof of insurance???

I have a question about car insurance. I lost the card they send for you to have in your dash for proof of insurance (and I am going to order another) If I put the insurance papers in the dash will it be om for me to drive? Will that count as proof of insurance?

Re: proof of insurance???

I think if you carry the policy with you that has the effective dates listed on it, that should be sufficient proof of insurance until your new card arrives. If you get a ticket you probably could get it "thrown out" if you present your new card to the judge.

In a word, yes.

The card is a miniature of your policy papers, and is just more convenient to carry around than the policy documents. For the policy docs, just be sure that they show the dates the policy is effective, and what coverages you have.

Drive on!

Just an interesting sidenote, in the UK, if we don't/can't show on demand, proof of insurance, we have 7 days to present the documents at our local police station.

Does this mean that in the US, you can get a ticket if you don't show proof?

Yep, you get a ticket...and have to go to court, where they dismiss it. I like the GB system better...it's more efficient.

Re: proof of insurance???

Yeah , the cops tend to write tickets for the "minorest" ( if that's even a word ) offense, forcing you to go to court to have it taken care of. Most of the time the ticket is dismissed if sufficient proof is shown to the court. I'll bet they bank on some of the scofflaws not showing up to contest the ticket, then the judge can rule against them and collect the fine + applicable surcharges.
