Modern translation of the bible

First, didnt we used to have a religion forum, say, 2 years ago? I took a hiatus and I'm not finding one now, but this is close enough I suppose.

I'm a Christian, but only because thats what I've always been told I am. I really don't feel like i have a close relationship with Jesus, I've always prayed directly to God. I'd like to give the bible a read, but I can't stand the way its written. Most religious text seems to maintain this attribute.

I'm wondering where I can find plain, simple english translations of religious text, specifiacally the christian bible.

Get the Updated King James Version. It's written in a modern English that we can all understand, not written in "Ye Olde English" with all of the "thee's" and "thou's".

It has every translation (20 just in english), and you could even read the whole thing online for free if you wanted, I personally prefer paper for reading. At the very least, you can read a verse in every translation and decide which you personally prefer.

Problem is translation. I;ve found several mistakes/huge differences between KJV and NIV.

You learn, you pray, you'll understand. Sounds liek you jsut want to read a good story and not really understand the Bible.

I have difficulty learning things solely from text. I need to discuss things to learn them. So I need a primer before I can go someplace to learn more about the text. I don't see this as me reading a "good story," I want to be able to hold an intelligent conversation with my religious friends and not be so lost when I go to church with them sometimes.

Codex Sinatus (sp?) should be out next July, it's an English translation of the earliest bible ever found (4th century).
