Blinking Red Lite next to Dimmer Control, what is it?

I have a 2001 Voyager, and I was having battery problems. I installed a new battery 10 days ago, and the car had no battery installed for about 90 minutes.

I then noticed that there is a little red light next to the dimmer control for the instrument cluster, and to turn on the dome lights. It started blinking immediately after replacing the battery, and never stops blinking. There are no symbols near this light, and you can press it in as if it was a button, but nothing happens.

I looked in the section of my owners manual that describes the Dimmer Control, and the picture does not even show this light. I have a shop Chrysler Shop manual, and I could not find anything.

I have been searching this forum:, but all I can find is issues of the HVAC lights blinking on 98 caravans . I am guessing it might be a BCM error light. I recall it blinked 3 years ago when I changed the battery, but it stopped after a day or two.

Does anyone know what this light is, and how to get it to stop blinking?

OK I still can't figure what this blinkin light does , but I learned how to get it to stop blinking.

In my original post, I noted that you can press it like a button. Today, I tried holding the button in for 10 seconds.... no more blinking.

could that be for aftermarket alarm valet switch, or something along those lines

I don't think it is anything aftermarket. First, the location of the light is just too close to the dimmer switch, and it is part of the assembly that contains the dimmer control and the power mirror controls.

I'm sure if you drove into your local dealership they could take a look and tell you what it is.

Post your pic on any number of photo management websites then come back here and post a link to the pic.

I would go with a after market starter disabler. Grandson had a Grand Marquis with a similar looking device and after we changed the battery the blinking light came on and I pushed and held the button and that did the trick.

I'm not sure what it is but I can tell you that it's NOT factory. (I've been a parts manager at a dodge dealer for seven years.)

Re: Blinking Red Lite next to Dimmer Control, what is it?

I find it really strange that it is mounted into the panel with the mirror, headlight, and dimmer controls. I would have thought something aftermarket would not fit there.

I got this van at an auto Auction. The carfax said the original owner lived in a very rural part of of New Jersey, I would doubt it is anything to do with a starter disabler.

What is strange about this van is that it is a low-line, and didn't even have cruise control (until I installed it using a dealer cruise kit). Still, it had power door locks (even though the sliding doors had key slots).

When I broke one of the remotes, I discovered that the remotes we got were for a 98 or 99 van (the really expensive and thick remotes). I think the original owner insisted on power locks when they bought the van. When that dealer didn't have the parts for a 2001, he rigged up a 98 Keyless entry system he had in stock.

I never liked the remotes we got, so I looked into converting to the thinner new remotes. I bought a 2001 keyless entry receiver, and a bunch of the newer remote fobs. t I was never able to figure out how the dealer did it. I have factory manuals, so I know where inside the dashboard to install the 2001 receiver, but I never was able to find the '98 receiver in the dashboard. I gave up and now we just use the keys.

grommitoo--If the light is not, in fact, an alarm system indicator, I'm betting that it does absolutely nothing. I've seen advertisements over the years about mounting a little red blinking light in the dash to make potential thieves BELIEVE that you have an alarm system activated.

Re: Blinking Red Lite next to Dimmer Control, what is it?

Recently, I was stuck waiting for my wife somewhere. I noticed that I could pull the Dimmer / Headlight panel off with my fingers. There is definitily some aftermarket alteration to the module. They really buggered the thing up to mount the switch next to the dimmer control.

There are several non-mopar wires running out the back of, and they go to a very non-mopar metal box that says "keyless entry receiver" on it. I now suspect that the switch / light is used to set a new remote to the receiver. It makes sense that it would blick if it lost power for an hour, it might have forgotten all of its remotes.

Anyway, now I know where the Aftermarket Keyless Entry Receiver is, I can remove it, and install the factory receiver that has been sitting in a drawer for two years.
