95 Grand cherokee. I do some towing with it, small boat. I knew i had about a half tank of fuel, but when i started and turned the car around to hook up the boat, i was empty. Hooked up the boat, parked the car (off) for a few minutes. Started the car minutes later to leave and i had almost half a tank of fuel, like i thought i had !!
Was towing 20 miles to nearby lake, on a route, at 40-50mph and i felt a clanking a few times. Thought it was something funny going on with the tranny, but came to realize it was the rear gear.
Few days later i was on the highway (not towing) and it was doing the same thing. I was going around 70mph. Felt the clanking of the rear and noticed the tach shutting off. I finaly realized the car was stalling out for what seemed like the shortest amount of time you could imagine.
Few days later i get in the car and start it. As i am sitting there, the fuel guage (I know i have just a tad under half a tank !!!) goes to empty and the light comes on. It goes up to 1/4 and back down. It was going up and down in that area for a minute, then came up to almost the half tank i knew i had. It wasnt just going to epmty and back to half. It was going up and down around 1/8 tank and 1/4 tank a few times.
I have no other stalling problems than the few times towing down the route and on the highway in the last week or so.
I am getting a code 55. I am pretty sure that is the battery connect code? Which would tell me the battery was disconnected within the last 50 starts? Correct me if im wrong here, cause i have not had the battery disconnected in over a year, eeeeeek. But if that was the issue, or part of it, the radio never shut off when i had these issues.
Also, im wondering, if the fuel pump stopped for a fraction of a second, wouldnt the car still run on fumes, rather than stall out for a fraction of a second? Im not real sure, with injectors the car would still run as if it was running out of gas, kinda like a carborated car would.
Oh, also, this is a straight 6 cyl
