Have you checked the gear oil for proper level? If it is whining going down the road, it is probably too late to change shims to adjust the centering of the pinion on the ring gear. I would try a can of STP in it before doing any mechanical work on it. It would probably be cheaper to get the whole axle assembly at the boneyard rather than replace the pinion and ring gear. If you've never done any differential work I would strongly suggest going to the boneyard. It's a headache to get the pinion and ring gear aligned to each other. The information you want could be found in the Chilton's manual at the library. The reason there is nothing about it in the Haynes is that the proper adjustment of the rear end is beyond most mechanics unless they have had some prior experience.

Re: 2001 F250 Super rear Axle humming

Since i've taken it apart, i've noticed that when you turn the driveshaft or one of the wheels, you can see play in the pinion gear. I mean it moves the bearing in the race (like it's not tight enough)before it spins.. I wonder if just tightening the nut on the yoke and squatting the colapseable washer will tighten it up. I had the essembly out to a bearing shop and they said there did'nt seem to be anything wrong with the bearings and absolutely nothing wrong with the races.

Back to the start, there was a noise when you aplied the trottle and it would go away when you let it go. I could move the yoke more than i should have been able to. I should have tightened the nut before i took it apart.

Re: 2001 F250 Super rear Axle humming

Just got a few other opinions and none of them seem to think that it's the rear axle. Seems like it's coming from somewhere between the center to the front axle.. I've noticed that the front side axles turn even with the hubs unlocked while driving. The drive shaft doesn't. I'v replaced the pinion bearing and i doubt that there was even anything wrong with them. I guess i'm the first person here to have such a problem with this kind of truck.. Anyone know any other sites i can check out?

I had a 3/4 ton old Ford and I bought shims at the dealer for the spider gears just be careful and go up until it feels like a newer vehicle. You need a small amount of play. Anyway it fixed this truck. The shims come in a pack with different sizes. They look like thin washers with a 1 1/2 diameter hole in the center O.D. about 2 inch diameter about .030 thickness.
