New motor on a budget

I've owned my 97 3000GT (base model) for about 3 years now, and it's approaching 160,000 miles. I'm looking to buy a crate motor, but at the moment I'm pretty much broke. Saving up isn't a big deal, but I'm trying to buy cheap. I'd also like a little more power than I get out of the stock engine.

Suggestions?

Re: New motor on a budget

that motor will last you probably 300k miles.

did you blow it up or something?

there is no such thing as a "crate" motor for these cars....

Re: New motor on a budget

DOHC/DOHC TT swap isnt direct drop in for a SOHC but is doable. Unless you have a high sentimental attachment to the car then sell it and buy what you want.

A few bolt ons will make the car more fun and peppy but its never going to be a street monster.

Re: New motor on a budget

u could probably fool a round a lil with the 3.5l tho. when i was a newbie i thought it'd b a cool idea, till i found out what can be done with the 3.0tt. plus 3.5 mite add some uniqueness to it.

but yea unless something is already wrong with ur motor it'll last u a while longer, just save and search for something u like till it goes kaboom

please refer above to what Stealthee said

SOHC -> DOHC isn't as easy as everyone thinks.

Re: New motor on a budget

i know...but if he's one of those guys who has money to throw around, and wouldnt mind it, then it'd b cool. and it's not just the sohc to dohc, i doubt anything from a stealth/3k would really work with the 3.5 anyways.

If you get the proper 3.5L... then yes, it's nearly a direct bolt in.

But this guy is looking for a BUDGET FIX.

what can he do? He can buy a used SOHC engine for cheap, and pay to have someone install it... or learn how to do it, as he goes along lol
