2001 Ranger stalls when gas is low
Gets down to about 1/8 of a tank, not empty, and starts chugging and then just stops like it ran out of gas. Adding even one gallon to the tank gets it going again. Did this a couple of years ago, then quit without my doing anything and its back again. I thought I'd change the fuel filter. Found out they don't have one. Thought of running a fuel treatment through it, but have heard varying things about whether those do anything at all.

Re: 2001 Ranger stalls when gas is low
It came with a fuel filter and if its never been changed I'm sure its time to change it. Your fuel gauge sensor could be off a little bit. I would never let the needle get below a 1/4 of a tank in your case so you do'nt keep getting stranded

Thanks. Can you tell me where the fuel filter is, because I can't find it in any reasonable place. For that matter, where is the fuel sensor?

Re: 2001 Ranger stalls when gas is low
The fuel sensor is inside the gas tank somewhere. not something that is cheap or easy to replace. The fuel filter is underneath the the car somewhere it is messy to replace. best left to a mechanic. To find the fuel filter you follow the 2 fuel lines out of the fuel tank toward the front of the truck and at some point one of the lines will have a filter in it. The filter is about 2 1/2 or 3 inches in diameter and a few inches long they make a special tool to get the filter off, and the fuel line needs to have the pressure released before removing it. even with the pressure released gas likes to leak all over the place

it's close do driver side under door. to find it better look on passenger side and you can see it on drivers side. and for the clips that clip on there i just use my fingers. but make sure you let pressure off it or it will throw gas every and might throw in your eyes.i just changed 2 on a fried of mine and my dads 2002.good luck.

Re: 2001 Ranger stalls when gas is low
I've seen fuel filters behind the engine, under the front doors, and around the rear wheel wells close to the tank. My old Taurus was between the two doors on the passenger's side. I had to be careful in taking the hookups off (but you can do it with a small screwdriver if you're careful). If necessary, cut 'em off and use hose clamps.
I've not seen a fuel filter yet that takes a special remover tool.

Re: 2001 Ranger stalls when gas is low
On the driver side, crawl in till you see the frame. Can't miss the filter. Caution: Your fuel system is pressurized so before attempting to remove the filter, you have to relieve the pressure. To do that look under the glove compartment and attached to the fire wall where the carpet ends, is the safety collision switch. Disconnect that, and try starting your engine for a few seconds to relieve the pressure. Note: Your gas gauge sending unit is located inside the gas tank attaached to the fuel pump. It may be malfunctioning in that at 1/8 level, you are actually out of gas.
